The COVID pandemic has effected upon traveling business all around Thailand. All kinds of this industry were in a suffer time for living especially those who hold the elephants’ lives in their hands. Most of them never got any help from government so, they started being forced to live in a difficult situation. Some must bring their elephants back to their hometown by walking because they have no money to carry their animals on the trucks, some chooses to buy their elephants to whom wants to use in logging industry or a circus. This is very sad story to the elephants.
By this reason, Ms. Lek Chailert, founder of Save Elephant Foundation decided to help raise up their lives and to help elephants for having a better life in this hard time. During this time of tourist absence, she spent many days visiting the elephant owners trying to encourage and help them through this struggle like she wants to shine light on the path, letting them know about our love and care.
Save Elephant Foundation began a program to help mahouts and their Elephants since March 2020 . It’s not only assisting with Elephant foods, but we also guide them to develop their skills, anticipating a return to normalcy. We paid for experts to train mahouts and their families to learn a variety of jobs, especially to make goods, products and things to sell online; we also trained them to use an internet platform to improve their business. We believe that education and diversified skill development are the best way to sustain through hard times and change for better future living.
The training of elephant owners and their families creates opportunities to enhance their income.
It not just only to help about a financial for the mahout’s family but also to give them the opportunities of sustainable job for being free from tourist industry. We hope, one day, if the mahout can find more ways to increase their income, we’ll found more cases that the elephant’s owners take out their elephants of being slave riding work.
After training so many mahouts, and members of their families in many regions, it is clear that they have talent. Here are some products ready for you : bracelets, coffee, bag painted, handbags etc.
All of our products have many stories behind because it comes from many different Mahout’s families. They made it by intentionally and we do our best for supporting their works because we want to see they have a better life and we want the most that many elephants will be better treated. While we teach them to make a products, we educate them about the facts of taking care of an elephant. We believe strongly that we can live with the gentle animals with love and care, no need hooks or chains to force them in control. We try to make them understand how to stay with elephants peacefully.
